Description
Curious Curls is looking for an assistant editor to read manuscripts, reach out to authors for projects, and help in other ways. This is an unpaid internship, but it is a perfect opportunity to get involved for English undergraduate students looking to get experience in editing, publishing, and the literary community!
About Curious Curls
Curious Curls Publishing is a small and relatively new literary press. Our goal is to help both already-grounded and newly emerging writers share their books with the world. We place focus on titles that evoke creativity and curiosity, whether in form or a character who expresses such qualities. We publish multiple titles a year, with a goal of expanding our knowledge and ability to market amazing books.
Responsibilities
Able to read manuscripts by deadlines, while being able to identify strengths, weaknesses, typos, craft elements, etc.
Able to communicate with authors in a professional and welcoming manner via email.
Comfortable with reading books and interviewing authors.
Able to proficiently navigate through literary journal/magazine, book publisher, and author websites.
Able to work independently, but should be sure to check-in and ask for help when needed.
Able to meet regularly via weekly Zoom meetings. These meetings are flexible and can be adjusted to the candidate's schedule.
Workload is dependent on the number of manuscript submissions, what is occurring in terms of projects, etc. Workload is about 6-10 hours a week and should never exceed 10 hours.
Candidate should be comfortable with being on video for TikTok staff content, etc.
Other duties may include providing content for the website, sending out rejection emails, helping brainstorm with promotion decisions, etc.

Qualifications
Familiarity with books and English as a subject.
Can work for at least 6 months. Exact time length would be decided by contract.
Able to attend weekly staff meetings.
In-progress undergraduate degree in English, Business, Marketing, etc. preferred, but not required. As an unpaid internship and a small press, we just want to make sure candidates pull the most from this opportunity.
Knowledge or experience in gathering followers on social media preferred.
